Chapter 8

Megan

Megan woke in an unfamiliar bed. It was very soft and the linen had a deep, spicy masculine smell. She couldn’t say how she knew, but she was certain this was Sandor’s room. Parts of the day filtered back to her, and she gasped as she threw the covers back and climbed out of the bed. The kids! Callie and Cory had fallen in the freezing pond and the guys had pulled them out. Were they alright? Where were they?

“Callie! Cory!” she croaked, as something else teased the back of her mind. Something terrifying yet, at the same time, compelling. But there was a block that wouldn’t allow it to develop.

A survey of her clothes revealed she was wearing an oversize T-shirt on top of her underwear. Where were her own clothes? And why couldn’t she remember anything after the moment she realized that both the triplets were still breathing? She staggered across the bare floorboards and pulled the door handle. The door swung open and she startled at the sight of Sandor’s huge figure filling the frame.

“Where are the triplets?” she said.

“They’re in the living room, doing a jigsaw puzzle.”

“They’re okay? The cold water…”

He laid an arm around her shoulder. “They’re fine. They’re very tough kids. When you blacked out on us, we carried you all back home. We put you to bed and ran a hot bath for the kids. They were back to normal in no time. Now, why don’t you throw some clothes on and come and join us?”

She nodded dazedly. “Okay. Just a sec.”

He gave her a kind smile. “I’ll leave you to it.” He returned to the living room and she crept along the corridor to the guestroom. She tugged on a pair of black jeans and a loose olive-green sweater. The T-shirt also smelled of Sandor and she decided to leave it on.

“There you are, sleepyhead,” Jason said, flashing her his nice, easy smile.

“Auntie Megan! Are you okay?” The kids pulled away from the coffee table, where a huge jigsaw puzzle was scattered, and ran toward her. She spread her arms and squeezed them tightly, before planting a kiss on each of their heads. The fire was blazing in the hearth, and the room was very warm.

“You two are looking well after your ice-cold swim,” she said, noting the healthy color of Cory and Callie’s skin. “Are you guys feeling okay?”

“Yeah, we’re doing a Christmas puzzle,” Callie said, blowing a huff of air, which disturbed her bangs. “But there’s one piece I can’t find anywhere.”

“Are you feeling cold? Your bodies must’ve had a pretty big shock from going into the water?”

Cory waved his hand. “Oh that. It was nothing.”

“They seem none the worse for wear,” Jason said. “Except I think they’ve learned not to go hurtling off in the snow like that.”

“How about you guys? You all went in the water—” Suddenly her legs got very weak. “What happened?” Even as she asked the question, memory returned. Her mind could no longer refuse the images filling it.
